Parental Leave Training Videos for Supervisors: 10A Transition Touchpoints for Making Leave ManageableTM

This series of short videos from the Center for Parental Leave Leadership is designed to help you support your new parent and team through this life and work transition in ways that help them grow as employees and as people. Using their evidence-based 10A Framework, each video highlights one of the 10 critical touchpoints where your management can have an oversize impact - positively or negatively - depending on your approach.

Phase 1 - Preparing for Leave

This first phase of your employee's leave preparation is work focused. The four touchpoints of this phase will give you best practices for:

  • handling the announcement that the employee is expecting a new child,
  • assessing your team and employee's unique strengths and challenges,
  • making an action plan that will strengthen your entire team during the transition, and
  • acknowledging the transition to parenthood in ways that make your new parent and team feel supported and valued.

Phase 2 - During Leave

This second phase of your employee's leave is parenthood focused. But there are things you can do to support your employee while they are out of the office. The three touchpoints of this phase will give you best practices for:

  • appropriately keeping in touch while your employee is out of the office,
  • ways to advocate for your employee while they are out, and
  • making sure arrangements are in place and ready to welcome them back to the workplace.

Phase 3 - Returning from Leave

The third phase of your employee's leave is focused on helping them transition out of their time at home and back into work and working-parenthood. The three touchpoints of this phase will give you best practices for:

  • thoughtfully acknowledging the transition to working-parenthood so your employee feels supported,
  • helping them adjust to their new normal by offering flexibility and understanding, and
  • celebrating how far they've come when they reach a meaningful anniversary of their return.
